Hi guys, I'm Justin Z. I am a Los Angeles, independent filmmaker and a freelance editor. I've been getting some basic questions on filmmaking including this one, the effectiveness of UV filters. Well, a UV filter is a piece of glass that you would put over your lens to block UV light or ultraviolet light. To understand what ultraviolet light is, the general spectrum of light ranges from infrared to ultraviolet and basically it's from red to blue. Ultraviolet is the type of blue light that is effected in different altitudes when you're using your camera and it usually when you take a picture or even when you shoot video, it shows up as a little more blue. So this is a UV filter, you put this over the front of your lens and basically it makes it so UV rays don't come into the camera and makes it so you don't have to worry about that slightly blue sheen. Now I always have a UV lens on my camera because there's always that slight bit of blue that will come out and it also creates a better sense of clarity with your images. They can be really cheap or really expensive, depending on the quality and the size of your lens. So pay close attention, go to a local frize or order online and make sure you get the right size and the right type for your lens but they are great for photographs and good for video as well. If you have any other questions about UV lenses or anything else regarding this, feel free to ask.
