Hi, I'm Lesa G. Williams, Owner of Mix in San Diego, California. Today, I'll be teaching you difficult dance steps in modern dance. One of my favorites is an inversion which basically means that you're going upside down. So, there's a little bit of gymnastics ability and upper body strength that goes with this one and I'll talk you through it first and then I'll demonstrate it. So, kind of like when you go into a handstand, it's that same idea except it's a little bit more technical and modern dance techniquey. So, we're going to go from this side and rather than when you go up into a handstand and you go over, I want you to think of going into the floor. So, we're going to start kind of a lunge; a really really wide lunge so you can get down into the floor, palms flat and then you're going to kick your right leg. So, I have left leg in front, kick your right leg up towards the ceiling, let your left leg come off the floor and let your head drop. So, it feels like a handstand except you are kind of going for the splits in the air. So, again, in your lunge, nice and low, hands to the floor, nice and flat so you have support, kick, let your head go and then come up slowly. So, the idea is once that right leg kicks up towards the ceiling, your other leg is just going to lift up. You don't have to bend it and you don't have to kick that foot either; it just becomes your right leg pulling up and then making sure you release your head so that you're right on top of yourself upside down. So, from your lunge, hands flat, kick your leg up and the longer you can suspend the better and the more dramatic it is in choreography. So, that's how you do a difficult dance step in modern dance.
