Hello, this is John from johnstrumpetstudio.com. Today, I'm going to tell you a little bit about the difference between brass and silver trumpets. All trumpets are made from brass which is a kind of metal. There are different coatings which are used on top of this metal which will reflect the sound and the feel of the instrument. This particular instrument is what's called bare brass. There is nothing on it. So if you polish this instrument up it will just be shiny and it will look a little bit like say a trash can you buy at Cost Plus Imports okay. When there's no coating on it it allows the vibration to be really free and the horn is freed up and feels and sounds a little bit different. But there are also other coatings which can be used. This instrument for example used to be fully lacquered. And lacquer is a clear coating that goes on top of bare brass. Lacquer has a tendency to peel off after a while so. If you start with a lacquer instrument eventually you'd be getting a bare brass instrument. Or eventually you have to get it re-lacquered. But you can see it's a clear, it's a clear coating. And you can see there's still quite a bit of lacquer on this instrument. Lacquer has a different feel then say silver for example. This is a piccolo trumpet which has been coated in silver. So keep in mind that it's still made of brass but the brass is dipped in silver. And silver is a little bit thicker coating then say lacquer so it does get a different feel and sound. A little bit more resistance if you will relative to lacquer. Now there are other coatings that can be used in addition to those. You can also have what's a gold plated trumpet which in order to have a gold plated trumpet you have to start with a silver trumpet. So the instrument is dipped in silver and then also dipped in gold. So you will have two coatings. It definitely feels quite a bit different. It's got a heavier darker feel to it when you have a gold plated instrument. And nowadays you can also get instruments that have various coatings. You could really coat it in anything but you can see on eBay for example there are instruments that are sold that are blue, or red, or black, they're painted. And so the dynamics of the trumpet don't change. You're still vibrating your lips into a mouthpiece which creates the overtone series. And you will get that regardless of what instrument you have or what coating is on the instrument. It's John from johnstrumpetstudio.com.
