My name is Mike Eyia. I am a freelance saxophonist living in Los Angeles, California. I play all around LA with several different groups as well as on the road and in the studio. Today we're going to answer the question of how to clean an alto saxophone. There are many different parts of the saxophone that are necessary to keep clean. You want to keep your mouthpiece clean, your neck, as well as the inside and outside of the body of your saxophone. To clean the outside of your sax, you basically just want to get a piece of cotton like a bandana, or anything like that or even just like an old t-shirt and just kind of scrub it. Just try and get the dust and stuff out of there, in between the keys, you could even use a toothbrush to get those hard to reach areas. If you really want to go the extra mile, go to your music store and get they have a little tool that you can get that will kind of reach inside all these hard to reach areas and clean it out. The inside, you can get a swab that is used to swab it all the way down inside the body of the horn. You pull it out, it's got all the gunk on it. You can get a swab for your neck and you can also get a swab for your mouthpiece. If you'd like to clean your mouthpiece in water, you could run some hot water and some dish soap or some bathroom cleaner some all purpose cleaner, and swab out your alto sax mouthpiece with a toothbrush or mouthpiece swab or something to that effect. Make sure that you keep your saxophone clean. Not only will it start to smell bad, but it also might effect the way that it plays if it gets too dirty. So my name is Mike Eyia, and that is how yo clean your alto saxophone.
