My name is Mike Eyia. I am a saxophonist in Los Angeles. I freelance with several different groups in LA as well as do a lot of work in the studio. Today we're going to answer the question why does my saxophone have a bad smell. Well, there are a lot of factors that can contribute to your saxophone having a bad smell. Probably the main thing is the fact that you are, you are blowing all of your saliva into the sax and if you're not cleaning it properly it's just going to stay there. So if you're going out and you're having an Italian meal and you're having a lot of garlic and onions and then you go to practice your sax for three or four hours, you're blowing a lot of that smelly food into your sax and it's just kind of staying in there and it gets pretty gross after a while. So you're best option is probably going to be to brush your teeth before you play, practice good hygiene so that you're not always blowing pieces of food into your sax and to keep it clean. You can get a swab from any music store. You can clean the entire body of the saxophone. You can clean your mouthpiece and you can clean your neck. There are different tools to clean each one of those things. So, my name is Mike Eyia and that is the best way to keep your saxophone from having a bad smell.
