Create a decorative and durable outdoor patio space with floor coverings made from natural materials. Design options include natural stones that create distinctive spaces, manufactured materials that are easier to install, as well as portable products that you can take with you if you move.
Tile options for patio floor covering include products made from natural stone, such as slate, travertine and pebbles and easy-to-install tiles that are conveniently transportable. Slate and tumbled travertine tiles work well on a patio floor because the tiles are uneven, which can provide a bit of traction when wet. Pebble tiles are made from small stones attached to a mesh backing. A pebble tile patio floor resembles a river bed on your patio. Snapping patio tiles are designed with a plastic base that elevates the tile material so that water can drain away. Built-in connection points on each tile make installation or removal a snap.
Tile your patio with natural flagstones or slate stones for a distinctive look. The color variations found in natural stones offer a wide choice. Natural stones vary in size and thickness, which can make installation a bit difficult. Arranging a natural stone floor is similar to working a puzzle; install natural stones on a bed of concrete or polymeric sand.
Cobblestone and other manufactured pavers create a decorative patio floor that weathers well. Manufactured pavers have uniform sizes and shapes, which takes the guesswork out of the floor design arrangement. Select cobblestone pavers for an Old World style or brick pavers for a more traditional approach. Lay pavers on a bed of mortar or arrange them in polymeric sand, similar to natural stones.
One of the most budget-friendly options for your patio is a stained concrete floor. Whether you are pouring a new floor or updating an existing concrete patio, staining can be a simple and inexpensive solution. New concrete floors should be cured for at least 30 days before staining. Remove any grease or sealants from old concrete floors with cleaning and stripping agents before you add a fresh coat of stain. Acrylic concrete stains are available in a variety of colors to suit any outdoor decor.
