Painting your kitchen cabinets is an inexpensive and quick way to transform your kitchen. When changing the color of your cabinetry, prepare the surface properly, as this is just as important as the color itself. Use the proper primer, sanding and paint type, e.g. oil or latex, flat or gloss, for durability. Consider your kitchen's components to determine the best color for cabinets.
Enhance wood cabinetry's natural color by staining it. Wood stains consist of pigment and dye colorants in a varnish or other solvent. They range from light to dark. Maple and oak stains are lighter, while cherry and oak are darker finishes.
"Cabinetry in rich, dark wood tones can give a kitchen a rich, upscale feel," says Better Homes and Gardens magazine. With simple details, such as small knobs, dark-stained cabinets create a contemporary and formal kitchen. They look good against warm walls, flooring and counters, as wells as touches of black throughout the kitchen. Medium-toned honey-colored stained cabinets work well with neutral and light wood complements and white or black counters and appliances.
Paint cabinets white throughout the entire kitchen or combine them with a dark color, suggests Better Homes and Gardens. For example, create interest by painting the mounted cabinets around the kitchen's perimeter in white or cream, and the kitchen island cabinets or mounted plate rack in a honey-colored stain or dark wood, making them the focal point.
"The colour black is a great foundation to style a contemporary influence in your kitchen," according Black Kitchen Cabinets. Black cabinets are appropriate for kitchens abundant in light tones, such as silvers, creams and whites, according to the website. You can choose between a sleek, matte finish or distressed black paint. Black cabinets work well with light-colored granite, but avoid mixing black granite or black flooring with black cabinetry. The color looks best in moderation and on cabinets with glass.
