Common Poster Frame Sizes

If you've ever purchased a poster and later searched for a frame for it, you may have learned that not all posters fit ready-made, standard-size frames. Types of posters as well as the time period in which they were produced help determine their size and whether you will spend a little or a lot to frame them. Before shopping for a poster, know the most common poster frame sizes to avoid having to purchase a costly custom frame.

Movie and Event Posters

  • A standard poster frame size for a large movie poster, called a one-sheet, is 27-by-40 inches. Old movie posters are sometimes 41 inches tall, so measure your poster to be sure. If you trim the poster at top or bottom or both, you may be able to frame it in a standard-size frame. An 18-by-24-inch standard frame accommodates the smaller lobby and venue posters for concerts, plays or other events.

New Decorative or Art Prints

  • Matting an odd-sized 22.375-by-34-inch or 23.5-by-31.5-inch art print poster allows you to use a standard-size frame of 24-by-36 inches, which also fits most common band, black-light and decorative posters. Other standard-size frames, such as 11-by-17, 12-by-36, 13-by-19, 16-by-20, 16-by-24, 20-by-28 and 20-by-30 inches, can typically be used to frame a variety of small- to medium-sized posters.
