For many, the back yard is a second home. Choose the perfect flooring to make your outdoor home comfortable and appropriate to the activities you enjoy. There are a variety of materials to use, from grass and tile to rubber and artificial turf. But focusing on function, you can make your backyard floor a space everyone will enjoy.
Grass is typical in a back yard, but it's expensive to put in and requires upkeep. If you want the look of grass without the fuss, consider artificial turf. Artificial turf resembles grass and several companies make quality versions that look like the real thing. Consider a brand made of nylon yarn materials. This flooring is weatherproof and child-friendly, providing cushioning to keep your kids from getting hurt when they roughhouse on the lawn.
If your kids are active and like to play sports or run around, rubber mats are a must. Rubber mats absorb shock in the event of a fall and complement any jungle gym or swingset. You can cover your entire backyard floor in rubber mats in the color of your choice. Opt for a dark gray to resemble asphalt or choose your favorite hue.
Slate flooring is a posh choice that will hold up for years. Slate tiles come in a variety of colors to complement the colors of your house. The tiles can be arranged in a path around grassy knolls or you can cover a large open area with a sophisticated mosaic.
If you've always wanted a deck, consider wooden deck flooring. Wood is family-friendly---safer than tile for back yards where kids are running around or walking to and from pools or jacuzzis. A wooden deck will require maintenance to protect it from insects and the weather, but for someone willing to take care of the material, it can last for years.
Tried and true, asphalt is a go-to material that might be right for your yard. Asphalt is easy to clean---you only need to hose it down. Plus, its scratchy surface will make people less likely to slip and fall. Asphalt can also make a great path to go in between different areas of a large back yard to separate a grass plain and a basketball court or pool.
