More than just a path to the inside, the front steps of your house are the first impression your visitors receive when they visit your home. They are a great way to make a bold statement or set the tone for the rest of your home. It is a good idea to keep your front step decor in keeping with the exterior design scheme of your house by relying on the same colors or similar architectural details.
Tile and Flooring
To enhance the "curb appeal" of your home, consider adding an interesting flooring design to your front steps. Often these steps are slabs of gray concrete which do not add to much aesthetic appeal to the outside of your house. Tile can add elegance and charm to your steps while enhancing the design scheme of the home's exterior. Try tiling designs in a mosaic, or even spelling out the address on the front steps. If tile is not your style, try staining your front steps. You could also consider using wood, stone or stucco to add interest to your front steps.
If a major renovation to your steps is not an option, simple decorative accessories can add interest and beauty to your front steps. If you have a green thumb, well-maintained potted plants will look charming arranged on the steps leading to your home. Consider choosing planters that match the decor of your home. For example, if your home is French country-themed, choose planters that are made of terra cotta with iron detailing. Pick flowers or ornamental plants that are well-suited for containers. Consider the sunlight and water your plants will need before you choose in order to ensure it fits with the location and your schedule.
Paint and Decorations
Another inexpensive way to add beauty to your front steps is to paint. Choose a paint designed for exterior floors or decks. Prep your surface before painting by pressure washing the area to remove any debris or color staining. Allow your area to fully dry before using your steps. If you have railing on your front steps, this is an easy way to add color and interest, especially during the holidays. For example, during Christmas season you can arrange a garland around the length of your railing.
