Ideas to Create Your Own Wall Borders Using Paint

Wall borders do not have to be limited to only wallpaper. There are many ways to create decorative borders with paint and a few other supplies. Create borders made of images or words, or even paint a solid border all the way around the room. Explore some options before you settle on wallpaper borders.

Solid Color Border

  • Paint a solid border of color at the top edge of the wall, or even at chair-rail height to add an accent to your room. Draw the edges of the border in a curvy, ornate or straight line with a pencil before you begin painting. If you are painting a straight-lined border, run a length pf painter's tape across the line to protect the rest of the wall and paint with a roller or large brush. If you choose a decorative line that is not straight, use a small brush to paint the detailed edge and finish painting the rest of the border with a roller or larger brush.

Striped Border

  • Paint a striped border using tape as a guide for your lines. Tape a horizontal line across the wall where you want your border to end and paint the border a solid color to start with. Tape vertical lines about 1 1/2 inches apart all along the horizontal line. Paint the areas of the wall between the tape with a second color of paint that complements the first color. Remove the tape once all of the paint is dry.

Stenciled Images and Lettering

  • Add some professional-looking lettering or shapes on your wall all the way around the border of the room. Purchase some decorative wall stencils in the paint department of your local hardware or home improvement store. The stencils will stick to the wall to result in clean edges on your lettering and images. Choose from hundreds of designs and lettering possibilities. Spell out your name or a favorite phrase with the letters and use image stencils to separate the words or phrases.
