Bedroom Ideas for a Swimmer

Make a big splash by decorating your favorite swimmer's room with a water or swimming theme. From floors to walls -- and even the ceiling, if you're feeling brave -- every surface presents possibilities for water-based decorative inspiration.

Walls of Water

Create an underwater mural on a focal wall to capture your loved one's favorite swimming view. Opt for an ocean- or lake-based underwater view, complete with fish, if she simply enjoys swimming in wide open water; create an image of a swimming pool as seen from underwater for a competitive swimmer. Project the desired image on the wall to trace and capture an actual scene, or make one up as you go, drawing the images in chalk first. For a simpler design, paint a silhouette of one or more swimmers in action on the wall using her favorite ocean or pool colors for the room's color scheme.

Into the Blue: Bedding

Fabrics in the form of curtains and bedding let you add more aqua inspiration to the room, even if you decide to go for subtle rather than over-the-top swimming decor. A comforter in watery aqua shades gives the impression of either a pool or the ocean, or you can purchase specialty bedding with the look of a pool as seen from above or below the water's surface. Customize light blue bedding yourself with large homemade stencils or stamps and fabric paint, adding a variety of swimmers working their way up or down the bedding.

Above and Below

Paint an aqua floor rug with black stripes to emulate the look of a pool at a swim meet. If you're feeling extra adventurous, paint the ceiling with an underwater view, as if the floor is the bottom of a pool or natural body of water. Create the faux water effect by first painting the ceiling a light blue color -- after all, you're looking up toward daylight with your faux painted view. Mix a translucent glaze with slightly darker shades of blue or green, or use a hint of yellow to create the impression of beams of sunlight, and glaze over the base color.

Round out the look of the room with accessories such as a lamp covered in aqua or blue sea glass, blue and aqua throw pillows or even shelves made from an old diving platform. Display swimming trophies on a shelf painted to look like a diving board, or in a display case with a background paper that looks like shimmering water. Hang posters and paintings with swimming-related art on them, or use framed photos from actual swim meets.
