Garbage disposal and dishwasher systems are connected underneath the sink in most kitchens, and a drainage problem with one appliance typically means a drainage problem with the other appliance as well. For homes with a Badger garbage disposal and a dishwasher that is not draining, there are a few things that can be attempted to resolve the issue.
Run the Disposal
If the dishwasher is not draining and the Badger garbage disposal has not been used lately, this is a good place to start. Turn on the water in the sink and run the garbage disposal for a few minutes. This can help clear any obstructions in the kitchen drain that could be causing problems with the dishwasher.
There is a connection point underneath the sink, between the garbage disposal and the dishwasher, where a plastic knockout plug should have been removed when the dishwasher was installed, the disposal was installed or they were both installed. If this plug was not removed, water cannot flow freely between the dishwasher and the disposal, and drainage problems can occur. Turn off the disposal and check for this plug. Remove as necessary.
Another reason for drainage problems between a dishwasher and a disposal is if the garbage disposal is clogged. Turn off and disconnect power to the disposal. Insert the end of the included Badger “wrenchette” into the hole in the bottom of the disposal. Work the wrenchette in a back-and-forth motion until it moves one full turn. Reach into the disposal with a pair of plastic tongs and remove any objects that may be stuck. Wait five minutes to allow the disposal to cool completely and then restore power. Press the red reset button on the disposal bottom.
Problems with the dishwasher can also cause problems with the disposal. Turn off the dishwasher and pull out the bottom rack so that you can look inside. Examine the bottom of the dishwasher for small, hard objects that may be blocking the drain valve and remove as necessary. Pull the dishwasher out and make sure the drain hose is not clogged, kinked or trapped. If the problem continues, contact a service professional for help.
