Use everyday items to create your Valentine's Day cards.

A lovely and fun way to show the ones you love how much you care for them, making homemade Valentine's Day cards will delight loved ones and friends. Creating your own Valentines has many advantages as they are relatively inexpensive to make and they speak from your heart. Don't be surprised to learn that the cards you give become treasured mementos.

  1. Traditional Cards

    • Gather up glue sticks, glitter, markers, paint, crayons, construction and craft paper to make your own heartfelt Valentine's Day cards. Get creative by cutting out different colored hearts and decorating them with glitter glue and Valentine's Day stickers before gluing them to your card. You may want to give your hearts a bit of personality by adding googly eyes. If you have children, encourage them to draw a picture inside the card or pen a heartfelt message.

    Stamping

    • Instead of spending money on fancy stamping supplies to make your Valentine's Day cards, use everyday household items. Turn a potato into a heart stamp by slicing it in half with a knife and carving a heart in to the vegetable's flesh. Dip your potato stamp into paint and decorate your card. Or, instead of creating a potato stamp, use your finger tips instead. Gently dip your index finger into the paint and press it against your card. You will have one half of a heart. Repeat the process to complete your fingerprint heart.

    Messages

    • Writing simple and sincere messages on pretty paper can make delightful Valentines. Scrapbooking paper, card stock and construction paper are options when making your cards. You may want to cut the paper into the shape of a heart. After writing your message, roll the paper up and tie with a ribbon or colorful string. Distribute your Valentines by giving them directly to the recipient or hiding them in a place where they will be easily found by your loved one.

    Candy Postcards

    • Including a piece of candy with your Valentine is literally a sweet way to wish someone a happy Valentine's Day. Using nondescript postcards or card stock cut in the shape of postcards, decorate the postcard with stickers, glitter or homemade hearts made out of construction paper. Write a message on the back of the postcard. To secure the candy to the postcard, tape or glue the candy onto the card. You can also use colorful stickers to secure the piece of candy.
