Why Does My Maytag 4650 Dishwasher Run so Long?

Maytag, a brand of appliances sold by the Whirlpool Corp., offers consumer appliances, including built-in and portable dishwashers. Maytag no longer produces the 4650 model, but you can still purchase it from third-party dealers. This portable dishwasher features the Jetclean II system, which efficiently removes food from your dishes. If your dishwasher is running for a long time, troubleshoot and repair this common problem before contacting a service technician.

Normal Operation

  • Your Maytag 4650 model dishwasher normally runs longer but more efficiently than older models. Generally, the cycle lasts between 1 1/2 and three hours, depending on the cycle that you selected. Your dishwasher also pauses several times during the wash cycle. Refrain from opening the door during the pause cycles. If you do, restart the cycle. If you select the “Sanitize” setting, your dishwasher runs longer to increase the water temperature.

Water Temperature

  • If your water temperature is below 120 degrees Fahrenheit, your dishwasher will run longer. Check the water temperature by running the hot water on your sink faucet for about two minutes or until it’s really hot. Stick a waterproof thermometer under the water. If the water temperature is below 120 degrees, increase the water temperature setting on your hot water heater. Before you start the dishwasher, run the hot water for a few minutes to heat the water before the dishwasher starts the cycle.

Heating Element

  • The heating element in your Maytag 4650 dishwasher is responsible for heating up the water and drying air in your dishwasher. If this element is not working properly, your dishwasher runs for longer period of times. Visually examine the element, and see whether it has burned-out or broken areas. If this is the case, order a new heating element because heating elements are difficult to repair. Disconnect the dishwasher from the power source, and remove the heating element. See whether any of the connectors are corroded. Clean them if possible, or change out the element. Test the element with a multitester. If it doesn’t have a reading between zero and infinity, it’s defective.

High-Limit Thermostat/Thermistor

  • The high-limit thermostat controls your water and drying temperature. If the thermostat isn’t working, the heating element may not come on. Test the thermostat with an ohmmeter, and see whether it has continuity. If not, order a new one since this component is difficult to repair. Check the thermistor, which also assists with the heating process. Test the thermistor for continuity. If it doesn’t have any continuity, order a new one from a Maytag parts dealer. You can’t usually fix this part.
