There are many ideas for traditional Italian costumes.

Whether you are hosting or attending an Italian themed-party or dressing up for Halloween, traditional Italian costumes are plentiful. As a male, the Italian culture provides you with a broad range of costume ideas ranging from the ornate historical Italian garb of Julius Caesar to the boxing shorts of Rocky Balboa. There several genres to consider when you are looking for the perfect costume for you.

  1. Historical

    • Choose from a number of historically famous Italians. For example, you could search for the New World as Christopher Columbus, paint the Sistine Chapel as Leonardo da Vinci, or beware of the Ides of March with Julius Ceasar. A good costume in this last category will include silky fabrics and robes with ornate trimming. Classic Italian costumes resemble those of the Renaissance time period.

    Gangster

    • Another traditional Italian theme is the gangster costume. Develop an Al Capone-like persona by dressing in a dark pin stripe suit, fedora and carrying a fake gun. Current gangsters include the John Gotti and Sammy Gravano associated with the Gambino crime family. These mobsters wear dark suits and talk with a New York accent. Cigars and blingy jewelry can also help identify you as an Italian gangster, both past and present.

    Food-Themed Costumes

    • Traditionally, Italians are known for their good food. Another way to identify yourself as an Italian is to dress up in a popular Italian food theme. For example, you can dress up as a canoli, box of pasta or an Italian chef. With some creativity and Italian-themed props you'll have the perfect Italian costume. For example, a simple pizzeria chef costume would include a white t-shirt, apron, rolling pin and chef's hat.

    Television and Movies

    • There are several Italian television and movie characters that are easy to impersonate. For example, the Italian Stallion, Rocky Balboa can be imitated with a pair of Italian boxer shorts, silk robe, and boxing gloves. A dark suit, tie and a few cotton balls in your cheeks can have you looking like Marlon Brando from "The Godfather" in no time. In addition, Video game characters Mario and Luigi, can be a great duo costume with the help of overalls and a plunger.
