They are known to be more accurate than their analog counterparts, giving a very detailed readout of current. They provide accurate details of current draw and continuity, helping to troubleshoot problem areas. Digital volt meters feature a dial that can be turned to the correct setting, depending on your testing needs.
Analog volt meters display their readings using a needle and a calibrated display scale. While no longer cutting-edge technology, these volt meters are still accurate and adequate to use for most testing purposes. Like digital versions, analog volt meters also feature a dial that allows you to select the proper settings for a specific testing application. Analog volt meters are designed with a tiny spring mechanism inside that retracts and extends, depending on current, and moves the needle gauge.
The most important feature of electrostatic volt meters is the ability to measure a current load without actually physically contacting the surface of the current supply. These are extremely useful when testing applications requiring voltage measurements that cannot be performed using conventional contacting volt meters. The probes of the electrostatic meter probes can be placed between 1 mm and 5 mm away from the surface to extract an accurate test reading.
Oscilloscope meters are one of the most advanced types of volt meters. They are commonly used to detect a rapid change of voltage in an AC current. Regular volt meters cannot react fast enough to display rapid voltage changes -- thus the need for oscilloscope meters in some applications. Oscilloscope readings are displayed with a two-dimensional graph on a screen. This creates a visual image of the tested current's wave shape. This helps to show pulsing or surges in a particular current.
