What Kind of Food Should I Have at My Housewarming?

A housewarming party is an exciting time to show off your new home to friends and family. Since you want to make guests feel comfortable in your new abode, serving finger foods and drinks is a great way to start off festivities. Since chances are you're pretty limited with cooking utensils or your stuff is still in boxes, little party foods are simple to make and don't take much time. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Appetizers

    • Every party usually has some form of snack food set out in bowls on the coffee table or bar. Allow guests to help themselves to tortilla chips with salsa or guacamole, snack-sized candies or miniature hors d'oeuvres. If you're limited with cooking equipment, set out a crock-pot filled with barbecue smoked wieners or meatballs and toothpicks for guests to serve themselves. Cheese platters from the grocery store also provide guests with crackers, cheese and meat selections.

    Main Course

    • In order to spend time mingling and celebrating with your friends and family, make food ahead of time and store it in the refrigerator. If you have a grill outside, you can easily nominate a friend or family member to work the grill and move the party outside. Assemble small turkey or ham sandwiches before the party and set them out after guests arrive. Grill chicken and vegetable kabobs or even more casual foods like hamburgers are ideal for a casual gathering.

    Dessert

    • For dessert, choose something simple like cookies or bite-sized baked goods from a grocery store. Chocolate chip cookies are a traditional favorite and they are easy for guests to grab when they want a sweet treat. You can also make your own treats inexpensively and without many utensils, such as crispy rice treats. Allowing guests to simply grab their treat with a napkin will keep clean-up easy after they leave.

    Beverages

    • There are few types of drinks you can serve depending on your budget and space. You can mix together a fruit punch bowl and set out for guests to serve themselves, or you can fill a cooler with canned soda or other drinks. Keep your new home clean by instructing guests to throw cans away in garbage bags, which you can then recycle after the party.
