Types of Outdoor Flooring Material

Save

Whether you're laying flooring for your patio area or designing a walkway, there are more options than boring asphalt to consider that help to create an eye-catching outdoor space. When choosing a material for an outdoor floor, safety and durability are important factors to consider, as is your style and the function of the space you are flooring.

Brick

  • Brick is a popular choice for outdoor flooring, as it is slip resistant and can be laid in a variety of ways to create different looks. The color of brick creates a traditional, warm and welcoming look that fits in well with outdoor spaces. Bricks that are hard-fired and made of natural materials are the best option, as they are the most durable and retain their color. Brick tiles can be laid in a variety of patterns to create an interesting look for your outdoor space, including a basket weave, checkerboard or even in a circular formation.

Slate Tiles

  • Slate is a naturally occurring material that serves as a good option for an outdoor floor. Like brick, it is a durable, slip resistant material that also has a natural look that works well in the outdoors. Though gray is the most common color associated with slate, it does come in an array of colors, including black, green, copper, brown, yellow and beige. Slate tiles can also be cut into different shapes to give them a one-of-a-kind appearance. For a muted look in your outdoor area, use one color of slate and for a more dramatic effect, or choose several different colors of tile and lay them in an interesting pattern.

Rubber

  • If you are looking to lay flooring in a child's play area or around a pool, consider using rubber. Tiles that are manufactured out of rubber are slip-resistant and provide a soft surface, making them more comfortable to walk on. If a fall should occur, the impact with rubber is softened. Rubber flooring typically comes in the form of tiles, and these tiles come in a myriad of colors. Though rubber is a fairly durable material, the weather in your area should be considered, as constant exposure to moisture can penetrate the tiles, causing them to deteriorate over time.

Gravel

  • Gravel is another material to consider for your outdoor flooring needs. Lava rocks, granite, limestone and other types of crushed rocks are used to create gravel, which means that several colors are available. In addition, gravel comes in different sizes, including small, pea-sized pieces and larger egg-sized pieces. This material is easy to maintain, is durable and can be used for all outdoor spaces, from gardens to driveways. Though gravel can be used for patio spaces, it is uncomfortable to walk on barefoot, and larger pieces can roll underfoot.
