On the surface, carports seem to serve no other purpose than to house cars. By adding decorative touches, however, you can transform the area into an aesthetically pleasing space. By focusing on small areas of the carport, such as the posts, you can completely revamp its look without breaking the bank.
A simple coat of paint on the carport posts will brighten the entire area. Avoid using excessively bold colors that will detract from your home. Instead, try muted earth tones, such as avocado green, sienna and auburn. To achieve a more modern look, use metallic colors such as silver or bronze. For a bold approach, paint stripes, zigzags or checkerboard patterns onto the posts. You can also paint stenciled images onto the posts, using such designs as flowers, leaves and lattice patterns.
Screw metal hooks into the posts, allowing you to hang decorative knickknacks throughout the carport. Give the area a shabby chic look by hanging antique tin or wooden signs from the hooks. You can also create a gothic mood by using hanging candle lanterns, tealight holders and votive candles. Use candleholders made out of material such as brass, colored glass or metal. For safety purposes, use battery-run candles.
Plants and Flowers
Use the carport post hooks for hanging planters with brightly colored flowers, including geraniums or petunias. For low-maintenance purposes, consider using artificial plants. If the carport sits next to fertile soil try planting something such as purple or white wisteria vines. Some varieties, such as Chinese wisteria, grow 25 feet or longer, ideal for wrapping along the carport’s posts and overhang.
Add decorative tiles to the carport posts. Use ornate stone, ceramic or porcelain tiles featuring floral or marble designs. For an added personal touch, find tiles marked with the initial of your last name. To save money, avoid tiling the entire post. Instead, create a mosaic pattern using a handful of decorative tiles on each of the carport’s posts.
