Finish off a sailor costume with great accessories.

Show off some pride this Halloween with a costume inspired by the brave men and women of the U.S. Navy. The sharp-looking uniform worn by sailors provides a great look for trick or treaters or partygoers of all ages, from young children to adults. After slipping into white or navy slacks and a crisp sailor top, there are many items that help accessorize and ultimately complete a sailor costume.

  1. Hats & Caps

    • A sailor uniform is hardly complete with a traditional sailor's cap. Sailors in the U.S. Navy top off their uniforms by adorning their heads with a signature white hat, with its brim folded upward. Accessorizing with a sailors hat is one of the easiest ways to make an authentic looking sailor's costume. Sailors who demand a little more power can don their officer's uniform with a fancy officer's cap in lieu of the sailor's hat.

    Badges & Jewelry

    • Show off a sailor's merits and honors by accessorizing a sailor's costume with a variety of badges and medals. Adhere small rectangular badges of various colors and patterns by ironing them onto the top left chest area of the sailor's shirt. Iron some stripes onto the left sleeve. A chrome watch with a U.S. Navy decal on its face gives the costume wearer a distinguished look that complements the costume. Alternatively, wear a thick ring with a U.S. Navy symbol or necklace with an anchor pendant.

    Outerwear

    • Sometimes it gets cold out on the bounding main. Rather than compromising a convincing sailor's costume by hiding it beneath a bright-colored parka or other article of outerwear, stay true to the nautical theme and keep warm with outerwear inspired by the U.S. Navy. A navy blue blazer adorned with anchor decals and medals looks like part of an officer's uniform. A navy blue and white striped cardigan has a nautical appearance that is better for beating the nippy air on a crisp fall day.

    Tattoos

    • After adding hats and caps, medallions and badges, and other accessories to a sailor's costume, it is time to accessorize with more personal touches that capture the look of an authentic sailor: tattoos. Before running to a tattoo parlor to obtain a permanent accessory, swing by a costume shop or craft store and purchase some body paint. Create faux tattoos on the costume wearer's arms. These tattoos could be of anchors, mermaids, pretty women and other inked designs that are frequently found on the arms of sailors.
