Tile is one of the most common coverings for bathroom walls because it holds up well to wet, humid conditions of a shower and bath area. However, tile is also an ideal choice for your bathroom because it is available in a wide range of colors, sizes, shapes and finishes, which provide a great variety of design options. Choose from several interesting patterns when installing tile to find the option that offers the ideal look to fit your bathroom's style.
Solid with Border
A solid tile pattern using a single color is the easiest look to install in your bathroom. However, you may find it boring because it lacks dimension and visual interest. To keep your project simple but still add some flair, pair a solid wall pattern with a decorative tile border. Border tile comes in a variety of colors and patterns, so you can customize the look of your bathroom walls. The most common design with border tile is to place it at the top of the wall. However, you can also create a bottom border, or place the tile across the center of the wall to mimic the look of a chair rail.
A checkerboard pattern is also easy to install and adds more pizzazz to your bathroom walls than a simple solid tile and border combination. Choose two shades of tile and alternative them across your walls to mimic the look of a checkerboard. Make this pattern as subtle or bold as you like depending on the contrast between the tile colors that you choose. If you select two shades from the same family, such as light blue and mid-toned blue, the effect is fairly subtle. However, you may choose two sharply contrasting tile colors like black and white for a bold, dramatic look. A bold look works well in a larger bathroom, but it may overwhelm a smaller space. Opt for a subtle contrast if you are decorating a half bath or smaller bathroom.
Add dimension to your bathroom walls by using tiles to create a diamond pattern. This design is one of the most versatile, so you be creative and choose the look that works best for your space. One option is to use two colors of square tile and install them so they are tilted to create a diamond shape. Cover most of the wall in the main color but add the second shade as accent diamonds throughout the room. Alternatively, use the second tile color to create larger diamonds in the center of the wall by placing them all together. Depending on the size of your bathroom, create a single large diamond on each wall or several connected diamonds to form an argylelike pattern.
One of the most decorative tile designs that you can choose for your bathroom walls is a mosaic pattern. A mosaic design uses tile of varying colors, sizes or finishes to create a unique pattern for the wall. In some cases, the tile is used to create an actual image on the wall, but you can simply use different colored tiles to create an eye-catching look for your walls. Glass tile is an especially attractive choice for bathroom walls because it catches the light to produce a shimmering effect. For easy installation, mosaic tile is sold in sheets with the pattern already assembled. While mosaic tile is available in a range of colors, a pattern that includes varying shades of blue is an ideal option for a bathroom.
