Some states allow all forms of consumer fireworks; some allow only sparklers and novelty items; some ban all fireworks, consumer and otherwise; and some have no fireworks laws whatsoever.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
Determine not only your state regulations, but also those for your county and/or city.
Step2
Call your local police or fire department to find out local fireworks laws.
Step3
Contact the National Council on Fireworks Safety, (301) 907-7998, or visit its Web site for information on state laws.
Step4
Keep in mind that using fireworks in areas where they're forbidden may result in a stiff fine.

Tips & Warnings

  • Consumer fireworks include cone fountains, cylindrical fountains, Roman candles, skyrockets, firecrackers, mines and shells, helicopter-type rockets, sparklers and revolving wheels.
  • Most cities and towns put on public fireworks shows. If you can't have the display you want at home, check your local paper for Independence Day events in your area.
  • Illegal explosives such as M-80s and M-100s account for more than 1/3 of all fireworks injuries. Be careful when lighting any type of fireworks (see "How to Use Fireworks Safely").
