How to Make Things Out of Scooby Strings

Save

Scooby string, Rexlace, gimp, boondoggle — these unusual names all refer to updated versions of the old plastic lacing used for years at summer camps to make lanyards. Scooby string comes in dozens of bright colors; it is hollow, which allows thin wire or pipe cleaners to be inserted so it can be twisted into shapes. Make jewelry, animal figures or other craft projects to decorate your room or share with friends. Here, a dragonfly will be created.

Things You'll Need

  • 1 Scooby string, any color
  • 1 two-inch safety pin
  • Black marker
  • Craft glue
  • Scissors
  • Lace the Scooby string through the spring end of the large safety pin. Position the string so there are equal lengths on each side of the pin. Mark the tip of the left string with a black dot; this will be strand A. The unmarked side will be strand B. Hold the pin in one hand with strand B straight down at the side.

  • Loop strand A over the top of the pin and under strand B. Bring strand B under strand A, through the pin and back out over strand A, making a standard bow-line knot. Pull both strands in opposite directions to tighten the knot.

  • Lace strand B (now on the left side) through the safety pin and over strand A. Pull strand A over the top of the pin, then thread it through strand B to make another knot. Pull both strands to tighten.

  • Repeat Steps 2 and 3 until the safety pin is covered with knots. Finish the dragonfly by making a bow at the end, leaving a large loop on each side; these are the dragonfly's wings. Tighten by knotting the bow loops. Dot the knot with glue to secure the knot. Allow the glue to dry completely for 30 minutes.

  • Trim the ends of the laces to remove any excess.
