An ocarina is simple wind instrument that produces noise when the player blows across the mouthpiece. The paper ocarina can play all the notes in a major or minor scale, as well as any songs with a single octave range. Players can adjust the ocarina's pitch and play simple melodies by pressing their fingers over the instrument's holes. Covering all of the holes produces the lowest note. You can make your own ocarina out of paper.
Things You'll Need
- 8 1/2-by-11 inch card stock
- Mat cutting board
- Steel ruler
- Craft knife
- Craft glue
Print the ocarina template from Xited.co.uk on a sheet of 8 1/2-by-11 card stock. You can decorate the unprinted side of the card stock.
Place the template, printed-side-up, on a mat cutting board. Hold a steel ruler against the solid lines and use a craft knife to cut along all the solid lines in the template, including the rectangles marked "A" and "B." Do not cut the dotted lines.
Cut out the squares and circles in the template. These will make the mouthpiece and the holes used to change pitch.
Fold all of the dotted lines on the full diagram and score them with the ruler. Then, fold the dotted lines on separate rectangle "A," but do not fold rectangle "B."
Glue all of the lettered tabs to the sides with the corresponding letter. Do not leave any gaps, because this will affect the instrument's quality.
Glue the "B" rectangle over the square mouthpiece on the larger template marked "B" so that the non-shaded part aligns with the mouthpiece.
Glue the tabs of the "A" rectangle over the shaded parts of the "B" rectangle to make the mouthpiece.
