Best of all, the installation procedure is easy to complete with a few basic tools.
Things You'll Need
- Tape measure
- Awl or punch
- Hand square
Determine the desired swing direction of the fence gate. An Ameristar Maxima gate latch is reversible, if necessary, and can be used on either right or left outswing gate configurations.
Measure down vertically from the top of the fence post on the latching side of the gate opening approximately 6 to 8 inches and mark the face of the fencing at the edge of the opening.
Position the latch against the gate opening with the top of the mounting plate aligned with the mark placed in Step 2. Hold the latch firmly in place, making certain the angled tabs are against the face of the fencing, and mark the two screw holes in the mounting plate on the gate post.
Push the tip of an awl or punch into the center point of the screw holes marked on the post to provide a small pilot hole for the lag screws.
Reposition the latch against the gate opening as before and secure the latch in place with the provided lag screws.
Close the gate and mark the horizontal center line of the striker hole in the latch on the edge of the gate's face. Use a hand square to extend the line approximately 2 inches horizontally.
Position the striker bar against the gate face with the bar's two screw holes centered on the line marked in the previous step. Slide the striker bar, as needed, to extend the end through the latch hole in the keeper lever to approximately 3/8-inch beyond the outer face of the lever. Secure the striker bar to the gate with the two lag screws provided.
Pull downward on the keeper arm to pivot the lever and free the striker bar to open the gate. Swing the gate open and closed to verify smooth operation of the latch. Adjust the striker bar, if necessary.
Tips & Warnings
- To reverse the latching direction of a Maxima post gate latch, remove the spring and shoulder bolt that secure the keeper lever. Flip the latch body mounting plate vertically and reattach the keeper lever and spring on the opposite side of the plate.
