How to Monitor a Room With a Webcam

Webcams, or video cameras that are viewable over the Internet, are used in many situations where discreet surveillance is required. You can easily place small cameras can easily be placed to monitor a room without anyone knowing. Many webcams come with the required software to create a site that is protected from the general public viewing the streaming video. Wireless webcams take only moments to set up.

      Request a static Public IP address from your Internet supplier if you desire to monitor the camera from any Internet-capable computer outside your home or office.

      Purchase a webcam that features the same wireless protocol as your wireless router (802.11g or 802.11n). Be sure the webcam has the ability to directly connect to the Internet. If you desire to monitor audio the camera will need a microphone.

      Run an Ethernet cable from the camera to the router and turn on the camera.

      Run the setup software on a networked computer.

      Enter the requested information such as any passwords to access the network. Save any information about the camera such as its IP address. Create a name for the camera. If you want to view the camera from outside your network follow the setup instructions in the software to create the option.

      Turn the camera off when finished and remove the Ethernet cable from it and the router.

      Turn the camera back on. The camera view is now visible in a browser on a computer on the same network when you type in its IP address. Test the camera over the Internet by typing the static IP address into the area where you would normally type the URL (.com address) of a website. Enter the camera name and password when prompted.

      Set the camera in the room that you desire to monitor.

  • Some states have laws concerning visually and audibly monitoring people without their knowledge. Know and understand your state law.
