1
Use muslin, cotton gauze or another breathable fabric for your sachet. You will need two 4 1/2-inch pieces of fabric for each sachet.
-
2
Wash and dry the fabric before sewing your sachet. Avoid fabric softeners, dryer sheets or any other products that may add an artificial scent to the fabric.
-
3
Choose a potpourri blend. You will need enough potpourri to loosely fill the sachet.
-
4
Use a ruler and a fabric marking pen to measure out two 4 1/2-inch squares.
-
5
Cut out the squares along the marked lines and pin the pieces with right sides together. Make sure that the fabric edges match up evenly. Place the pins at 1/2-inch intervals and at right angles to the fabric edges.
-
6
Use a sewing machine to stitch the fabric pieces together, 1/2 inch from the raw edges. When you reach a corner, lift the presser foot of your sewing machine and swivel the fabric so that your stitching line remains straight. Keep the needle inserted in the fabric as you reposition it.
-
7
Leave a small gap in the seam of one edge of your sachet. The gap should be large enough to allow you to pour in the potpourri.
-
8
Fill the sachet with your chosen blend of potpourri. Avoid filling the bag too tightly.
-
9
Machine stitch the gap closed and place the sachet in your pillowcase.

Tips & Warnings
Try not to be overly concerned with the cosmetic appearance of your sachet. It will be hidden from view inside your pillowcase.
Sew the sachet into the hem of your pillowcase if you have a tendency to move your pillow around a lot while you sleep. Simply open up the existing hem of the pillowcase with a seam ripper, place the sachet inside and stitch the hem back up again. You may need to make your sachet smaller so that it fits inside the hem.
Check your potpourri blend to make sure that it contains nothing to which you are allergic. If you experience any allergylike symptoms when using your sachet, discontinue use immediately.

I like to use sheets of lace to make nice packets that can be used in drawers, shelves, and suitcases (to keep them from becoming musty). Cut the lace into oblong shapes and fold top down to make a finished edge. Fill and close with a pretty ribbon.
