Homemade play dough is an inexpensive way to encourage children to use their imaginations and strengthen the fine muscles of the hands and fingers. Play dough provides children with the sensory experience of manipulating something soft and squishy. But color, smell and even taste can add to the experience of playing with play dough. Edible pumpkin play dough that smells and tastes like pumpkin can be incorporated into learning activities and lesson plans revolving around autumn or Halloween.
Things You'll Need
- Mixing bowl
- 16 oz. canned pumpkin
- 3 oz. honey
- 1 cup flour
- 1 cup powdered milk
- 1/2 tsp. pumpkin pie spice
- Red food coloring
- Yellow food coloring
- Plastic container
Empty a 16-oz. can of pumpkin into a mixing bowl. Pour 3 oz. of honey over the pumpkin. Stir the two ingredients until they're smooth.
Add 1 cup each of flour and powdered milk, as well as 1/2 tsp. of pumpkin pie spice. Stir the play dough until the dry ingredients are moistened. Then work the dough with your hands to knead in the dry ingredients. Add more flour and powdered milk, 2 tbsp. each at a time if the dough does not have the same consistency as bread dough.
Give the play dough a deep orange pumpkin color by adding food coloring. Add two drops of red food coloring and one drop of yellow food coloring at a time and mix into the dough. Continue to add food coloring in this manner until the desired color is achieved.
Store the pumpkin play dough in a plastic container in between uses.
