How to Repair the Electronic Controls on a Whirlpool Dryer

Whirlpool's newer front-loading dryers have an electronic control panel, located on the top of the front panel of the dryer. The control panel allows you to operate the dryer, choose the cycle and select cycle modifiers such as wrinkle guard and the temperature of the air used to dry your clothes. Unlike old-style dryers, which have an analog timer on the control panel that is replaceable, electronic control panels that malfunction must be replaced entirely.

Things You'll Need

  • Screwdriver
  • Unplug the dryer from the wall outlet.

  • Remove the screws on the rear of the top panel, securing the top to the dryer cabinet.

  • Lift the top panel up and off of the dryer.

  • Squeeze the tabs on the left and right sides of the inside of the control panel, then pull the control panel off of the front of the dryer.

  • Pull the control panel wire connector off of the control board, on the right-side of the dryer. Discard the control panel.

  • Connect the wire connector of the new control panel to the control board on the right-side of the dryer.

  • Snap the control panel onto the front of the dryer.

  • Replace the top panel, securing it with the screws that you removed.

  • Plug the dryer back into the wall outlet to complete the replacement.
