How to Access the Heating Element in a Kenmore Heavy Duty Dryer

Save

The only reason you should need to locate the heating element in your Kenmore heavy duty clothes dryer is because the dryer no longer produces heat. As the dryer pulls air into the unit, the air passes by the heating element and warms as it goes into the dryer drum. When the coils on the element break, the electrical current that forces the element to heat stops. When this happens, you must locate the element so you can replace it.

Things You'll Need

  • Blanket
  • Screwdriver
  • Pull the dryer away from the wall and then place a blanket in front of the dryer. This will prevent scratching the dryer.

  • Disconnect the power cord and then locate the flexible dryer vent mounted to the bottom corner of the dryer. Loosen the band clamp with a screwdriver and then pull the vent off the dryer.

  • Place the dryer on its face so you can access the rear of the unit easier. If you prefer, you can forgo this step.

  • Remove the screws that hold the silver metal cover onto the back of the Kenmore with a screwdriver and then place the cover off to the side.

  • Locate the ductwork in the back of the dryer. You will notice an oblong canister with a wiring terminal block connected to it.

  • Pull the wires off the terminal block. The connectors are the same, so take note of where the wires go.

  • Remove the screws that hold the cover of the oblong canister in place with a screwdriver and then place the cover off to the side.

  • Locate the rectangular heating element inside the canister. It has several coiled stands of wire and a terminal block connected to it. It is the only object inside the canister.
