DIY Custom Coasters
If no one uses the drink coasters that are stacked neatly on your coffee table, then it may be time for a more eye-catching set. Make a stack of custom coasters that are so attractive, people won't be able to resist using them, eliminating unsightly ring stains on your furniture. Using a durable tile base for the coaster will ensure that it can withstand frequent use, and multiple layers of sealant will protect your design. Well-made custom coasters also make a thoughtful gift or party favor.

1
Clean the tile by wiping it with a wet cloth. Let it dry completely.
-
2
Plan the design for the top of the coaster. Select a photo or a pretty piece of patterned paper, or use a simple die-cut shape or sticker. Your child could also draw a picture directly on the tile, or you can write someone's name on the tile with permanent marker.
-
3
Trim the design so that it isn't bigger than a 4-by-4-inch square. If the design has several layers, use craft glue to hold its various elements together. (If you decided to draw directly on the tile, skip step 4.)
-
4
Use the foam brush to apply a thin layer of Mod Podge to cover the top of the tile. Place your design on top of the prepared tile and press down gently. Allow the Mod Podge to dry completely, bonding the design to the tile.
-
5
Use the foam brush to apply another thin layer of Mod Podge to the top of the tile, completely covering your design. Ensure the edges of the design are covered and that there are no gaps or bubbles between your design and the tile. Allow it to dry thoroughly.
-
6
Repeat Step 5, adding another layer of Mod Podge. Let it dry completely.
-
7
Take the tile outside, and spray the top with an even coat of the acrylic sealer. Allow it to set for 24 hours so that all layers dry completely.
-
8
Glue the felt or cork square to the back of the tile. This will protect the surfaces on which you will use the coaster.

Tips & Warnings
Don't use too much Mod Podge. A thick layer will cause it to bubble.
Use even strokes when applying Mod Podge so that the stroke lines blend for an even finish.
