How to Attach a Char-Griller Side Fire Box
The Char-Griller is a brand of outdoor charcoal grill that can be equipped with an optional fire box on the side so you can use the grill as a smoker. Basic modifications are required to attach the fire box, including punching out the side damper vent on the Char-Griller. Use a power drill with metal-drilling bits. Once you remove the vent, attaching the fire box takes less than 15 minutes. The fire box is sold separately at retailers that carry the Char-Griller line. Does this Spark an idea?

Open the Char-Griller lid to remove the cooking and charcoal grates. Set them aside.

Unscrew the four bolts that hold the Char-Griller to the stand and turn the main Char-Griller barrel on its left side. The damper vent on the right side of the grill faces upward.

Drill through the six-hole templates around the damper using a 5/16-inch drill bit. Tap out the metal damper plate to create an oval opening in the side of the grill.

Line up the holes on one end of the firebox with the six holes in the side of the Char-Griller. Insert the bolts supplied with the fire box through each hole in the firebox and through the hole in the Char-Griller. Secure each bolt with a nut twisted onto the bolt inside the Char-Griller and tighten with pliers.

Reattach the Char-Griller to the stand using the four bolts you removed in Step 2. Replace the charcoal and cooking grates and close the lid.

I had the same question. Seems like you could control the heat better with the damper plate there, but on the other hand the holes are pretty small so not as much heat would be coming over. Sent a note to Char-Griller, my bet is no damper plate.

Do you have to punch out the oval piece? Our's didn't come with instructions. My husband and son in law attached the firebox without removing the oval. They just punched out the holes for the scews.
