How to Make Felt Boot Patterns

Save

Felt boot construction uses a curious process of shrinking carded wool into a tough fiber fabric with the use of hot water and physical manipulation. This is a project that takes some time, but simple enough for adults or children to do. The outline makes the basic design for the boot, and it is interesting to watch the boot shape emerge from a fluffy collection of wool with the addition of massaging and hot water. The fibers shrink together to make a tight bond that will not come apart under normal indoor wear and tear. Before starting the process, you must create a pattern for the boots.

Things You'll Need

  • Measuring tape
  • Paper
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Tightly woven fabric
  • Trace around the outline of your feet onto a piece of paper. Add two inches to each side of the outline in a rounded shoe-sole shape. You can make specific outlines for each foot, or you can use a general outline for both feet.

  • Draw the upper for the shoe off of one side of the drawing. Make the upper anywhere from 3 to 10 inches long. The longer the upper, the taller the boot. Cut out the outline from the paper when you are happy with it.

  • Trace the outline of the pattern onto a piece of tightly woven fabric. Trace two outlines; you will use one outline per boot.

  • Use the fabric outline as a resist inside carded wool to make the felted boot.
