How to Charge an iPad From a Laptop

According to the iPad user manual, the best way to charge the device battery is by using the USB dock cable and power adapter with a wall outlet. You can also charge the iPad using a USB port on your desktop computer or laptop. With the exception of the iPad USB dock cable, no additional items are needed to charge the device from a laptop.

Things You'll Need

  • iPad USB dock cable
  • Connect your laptop to its power source. Make sure the laptop is not hibernating or in any type of sleep mode.

  • Insert the USB end of the iPad USB dock cable into an available USB port on your laptop.

  • Insert the other end of the iPad USB dock cable into the slot on the bottom panel of the iPad. The symbol printed on connector end of the dock cable should face forward.

  • Examine the battery icon in the top-right corner of the iPad display. The icon will appear green with a black lighting-bolt shape inside of it when the iPad is charging. When charging is complete, an electrical plug-shaped symbol appears inside of the green battery icon.

Tips & Warnings

  • To safely remove the iPad from the laptop, click the "Eject" symbol next to the iPad under the "Devices" section of the iTunes window. By default, iTunes launches when you connect the iPad to the computer.
