Instructions for a Samsung Unlock Code

The GSM network is the most globally accepted protocol for mobile phones in the world. Many different phone companies in many different countries operate on the GSM network. When you buy a phone however, it may be SIM locked to the company from which you bought it. In order to use it with another company, you have to unlock it. Many Samsung phones operate on the GSM network, and can be unlocked using a code. If you want to know whether your Samsung phone operates on the GSM network, check to see if it has a SIM card.

Things You'll Need

  • Prepaid or foreign SIM card
  • Obtain your Samsung's IMEI number by typing "*#06#" into the keypad. Write down the number that appears on the screen for later use.

  • Call your service provider and request an unlock code. Give the customer service representative your name, mobile number and IMEI number. If the representative refuses to give you a code, you can purchase one from a remote unlocking site such as, or, which are listed in the Resources section below.

  • Turn off the phone and remove its SIM card, which is usually located beneath or next to the phone battery.

  • Insert your new foreign or prepaid SIM card and turn the phone back on. The screen should ask for a password. Enter the unlock code that you received in a previous step. If, however, your phone says "Incorrect SIM Card" when you power it back on, enter "#0111*unlock code#". The "unlock code" is the one you received in a previous step. Your Samsung phone is unlocked and ready to use on your new network.

Tips & Warnings

  • Although most Samsung phones unlock using the same method, there are a handful of models that use a different method. Follow the specific instructions that come with your unlock code, if they differ from the method above.
  • Many Samsung phones are only given a limited number of unlock attempts. Enter your unlock code carefully, as entering the wrong code too many times will cause your phone to become hardlocked, meaning that you may never be able to unlocked it.
