How to Draw Face Silhouettes
The silhouette of a person is one of the most important things when you are learning to draw. The silhouette can be left on its own or later filled out for a full face drawing. No matter which way you intend to take your silhouette, mastering the silhouette is the first step. The key is to look past any details on your subject and focus only on the natural outline of the face.

Start by practicing outlines of people's faces by tracing images of people in magazines, books or newspapers.

Draw a square in the center of your sketch pad that is as big as the face silhouette you want to draw. Create a geometric grid inside the square such as even lines across or triangles to help divide the space into several sections.

Look at the face of your subject and picture her face inside the square. For example, hair and the forehead would be in the top portion of the square while eyes and nose will be in the center and the mouth toward the bottom.

Look at the overall outline of your subject's face. Ignore the details. Look for shapes such as a round head, oval chin or square jaw. Start by drawing the outline of the head at the top and work your way down to the chin.

Add the silhouette of the hair last. Draw the neck.

Use an eraser to remove the square and the guide lines and leave only the silhouette you have drawn. Sign and date your work.
