How to Dress Up as the Rat From "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles"

Save

Splinter is the mutant rat master of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, a '90s animated series that spawned several live-action films, merchandise and additional animated series. Splinter's origins vary depending on which series you follow--some regard him as a man who was transformed into a rat by the same green ooze that changed the turtles, while others believe he was a pet rat also affected by the ooze. Create a Splinter costume that mimics his appearance in the live-action films or the animated series, depending on your preference.

Things You'll Need

  • Brown or burgundy robe
  • Scissors
  • White bandages
  • Medical tape
  • Rat mask or nose
  • Brown face makeup (optional)
  • Black eye pencil (optional)
  • Faux beard (optional)
  • Prepurchased or homemade rat tail
  • Belt (optional)
  • Brown walking stick

Use scissors on a brown or burgundy robe to give it a tattered appearance. Splinter's robe is a light brown in the live-action films and ranges from brown to burgundy in various "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" animated series. Purchase a ninja robe from a costume store or browse consignment shops for old robes. Look for a robe that is already worn and comes down to the knees if possible.

Wrap white bandages around the feet and up around the ankles. Use medical tape to secure them.

Do one of the following to create a rat-like appearance: Paint the face in brownish-tannish makeup colors and use black eye pencil to create whiskers; use faux beard materials to put hair on the face if desired; or purchase a rat mask or a rat nose and use makeup as needed.

Use a belt to secure a prepurchased rat tail, or make your own by wrapping tan-colored tape around craft wire.

Carry a wooden walking stick to complete the costume.
