PhotoShop has long been an industry standard in the graphics design community, and is the flagship of the Adobe Creative Suite (currently in version five). It has been instrumental in building Adobe's reputation for quality over the past decade. PhotoShop does almost anything in photo manipulation, and has few peers in the graphic design arena. As such, making a favicon in .ico format can be accomplished very quickly. All you need is a simple plugin.
Download the plugin from telegraphics.com.au/sw/#icoformat. Click on the Windows 32-bit version or Windows 64-bit version, depending on which hardware you use, and download the .zip file.
Extract or "unzip" the folder, which contains three files: a readme file, the Gnu Public License file and the plugin itself.
Copy the plugin file (or drag and drop) to C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS5\Plug-ins\File Formats.
Restart PhotoShop if it's already running. Go to "File," "Save As" and choose the .ico file format.
Tips & Warnings
- Remember that the .ico format is for tiny image files. Anything greater than 256 by 256 DPI, and the .ico format won't even appear in the "Save As" dialog. Generally, favicons aren't any larger than 16 by 16.
