How to Enable Java on a Mac

Many websites use Java applications to deliver advanced content because Java is a cross-platform programming language environment that works on different operating systems, including Mac OS X. Your Mac comes with Java enabled and can even have multiple versions of Java installed. If Java is not working properly on your computer and you receive pop-ups telling you to enable Java, you can change Java settings.

  • Double-click on your Mac's hard drive.

  • Navigate through the folders by double-clicking on "Applications," "Utilities" and then "Java Preferences."

  • Double-click the "Java Preferences" icon.

  • Check a box next to a version of Java to use in both the dialog fields that you see on the screen. If you are having problems, you should use the latest or highest-numbered version of Java.

  • Click the red "Close" button to close the window.
