How to Burn iTunes Playlists to CDs

ITunes playlists are today's mix tapes. An iTunes playlist is a collection of songs you create manually or automatically (using the Genius feature). Playlists do not need to be from the same album or artist. You mix and match your favorite songs from your music library, arrange them in a playlist and play them on your computer or iPod. In addition, if your computer has a CD burner, you can also burn playlists to a CD, so you can enjoy them in the car or in other CD players.

  • Open iTunes and select a playlist in the left column under the "Playlists" heading.

  • Select "File," and then select "Burn Playlist to Disc" from the main menu to open the "Burn Settings" dialog.

  • Select a "Preferred Speed" from the drop-down menu.

  • Choose "Audio CD" in the "Disc Format" section.

  • Choose a "Gap Between Songs" length. You can choose from none to five seconds.

  • Mark "Use Sound Check" to record all the songs in the playlist at the same volume.

  • Mark "Include CD Text" to include any metadata, information such as the artist name, album name and song titles. This information will appear on CD players that can show it.

  • Click the "Burn" button.

  • Insert a blank disc into your computer's CD/DVD player (if you have not done so already).

Tips & Warnings

  • You may see a confirmation message telling you that you may burn seven CDs of a playlist containing songs purchased from iTunes. Click OK to continue.
  • Blank CDs hold 74 or 80 minutes of music. If your playlist is longer than this, iTunes will ask you you to split it into two CDs. Otherwise, you need to shorten it.
