How to Clip Layers in Photoshop

The Layers palette helps you edit images more efficiently in Photoshop. You can apply the contents of one layer to another layer with a clipping mask. The layer that takes on the contents of the other layer gets masked. Any contents that aren't masked are clipped away. In order to use the clipping mask, the masked layer must be directly above the masking layer. You can clip one or more layers with a clipping mask in Photoshop.

  • Open the image you want to modify in Photoshop and go to the Layers palette.

  • Hold and drag the layer you want to clip directly above the layer with the contents you want to use.

  • Select the layer you want to clip.

  • Click "Layer" and "Create Clipping Mask" from the menu.

  • Repeat steps two to four to clip additional layers.
