How to Sew a Ball Shape

Save

The easiest way to make a ball shape is to sew together six or more oval-shaped panels. These sewn balls can be used for many projects, such as toys and games, pom-poms or decorative elements on hats and clothing. A sewn ball requires some skill, but it not beyond the reach of even a beginning sewer.

Things You'll Need

  • Pencil
  • Paper
  • Stretchy fabric
  • Scissors
  • Sewing machine
  • Thread
  • Filling (stuffing, beans, sand or other filling)
  • Needle
  • Make a pattern for the fabric panels you will use to construct the ball. Each panel resembles a rounded leaf shape with an oval middle and tapered ends. The size for the ball will vary, but if you make each piece about 6 inches long and 4 inches high, your ball will be about 18 inches around and 6 inches tall.

  • Pin the pattern to the fabric and cut out six pieces.

  • Place the right sides of the fabric of two of the panels together and pin in place. Sew the panel pieces together using a 1/4 inch seam. Sew another panel to the other side of the panel, using a 1/4 inch seam.

  • Sew the other three panels together in a semi-circle. Face the right sides of the two semi-circles together and sew the pieces together. Leave a 2 inch opening in one seam to fill the ball.

  • Turn the ball out and fill with stuffing. Make sure to add enough stuffing so that the ball is as full as it can get.

  • Fold the exposed edges of the fabric under so that they are hidden inside the ball. Sew the opening closed to finish the ball.
