When a sink garbage disposer burns out, you need to remove it before installing the new one. A mounting bracket holds the food disposer to the bottom of the sink. Once you've removed the garbage disposer, removing the mounting bracket takes only a few steps. If your sink has started leaking, the leak may be coming from a broken seal around the sink flange. This flange is what the mounting bracket and garbage disposal are connected to.
Things You'll Need
- Flat head screwdriver
- Safety glasses
Loosen the three screws that hold the bracket on the sink flange using a flat head screwdriver.
Locate the ends of the snap ring on the end of the sink flange. Pry one end up and off the flange with the flat head screwdriver. Pull down on the snap ring to remove it from the sink flange.
Slide the mounting ring, the backup ring and the fiber gasket down off the sink flange. Push up on the bottom of the sink flange to pop it up through the sink floor.
Tips & Warnings
- Until the snap ring is removed, the mounting bracket cannot be disassembled.
- Wear a pair of safety glasses while working beneath the sink.
