Hearing your turbocharged car roar between shifts increases the enjoyment of driving by adding turbo sounds to the exhaust note. Every factory turbocharged car comes equipped with an intake system that reduces intake sound, and many come equipped with additional silencers. By removing the factory intake system and replacing it with an aftermarket open air intake, you will dramatically increase the sound from your vehicle's turbocharger.

- Air intake kit
- Comprehensive set of hand tools including wrenches and socket set
Park your car and allow the engine to cool. Open the hood and locate the turbocharger. The location will depend upon your car's configuration, but the turbocharger will be mounted on the exhaust side of the engine. In many front-wheel driver cars this means the turbo will be in the front, as the engine is mounted sideways. For a rear-wheel drive car, the turbocharger will also be mounted on the exhaust side, but can vary based upon number of cylinders.
Remove the factory air-box and factory tubing. Identify the intake tube that runs from the turbocharger to the front of the engine. This tube feeds air to the engine. Use a wrench to remove the bolts that secure the airbox, then undo the clamp that holds the intake tube to the air-box with either a set of pliers or a screwdriver, depending upon your car. Unplug the mass airflow sensor (MAF), then remove the MAF from the factory location. Finally, remove the intake tube that connects to the turbocharger.
Install the MAF sensor into the aftermarket intake tube, then install the tube into the engine bay. Your kit will come with brackets that line up with the old factory airbox fastener locations, typically reusing the factory hardware. Connect the intake tube to the turbocharger, then install the open air filter onto the end of the intake tube.
Check all hardware after driving 100 miles to make sure everything is tight.
Tips & Warnings
- Since you have removed the factory air box and any potential silencers that were integrated into the airbox, your turbo will be much louder. You will notice a loud venting of air when you shift. That is the normal sound from the factory by-pass valve, which is silenced from the factory.
