How to Sew Bed Comforters

How to Sew Bed Comforters thumbnail
Make your bed more alluring with a homemade comforter.

Stay warm at night with a homemade bed comforter. If you can sew a straight line, you can stitch a bed comforter without too much effort. The method for making a comforter is similar to making a duvet, or cover, except you fill the comforter with batting and stitch all four sides closed. Use appropriately sized bed sheets to make your job easier or find fabric large enough for the comforter. Make the comforter reversible by selecting two contrasting fabrics. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the fabric to the appropriate size if you are not using flat bed sheets. Cut two pieces of fabric that measure 67 inches by 87 inches each for a twin-sized bed, two pieces of fabric that measure 87 by 91 inches for a full or queen-sized bed, or two pieces of fabric that measure 105 by 91 inches for a king-sized bed.

    • 2

Stretch one piece of fabric or sheet out on a flat surface with the right side facing up.

    • 3

Place the second piece of fabric or sheet on top of the first with the right side facing down.

    • 4

Drape the quilt batting over the second piece of fabric. Pin the fabric and batting together on all four sides.

    • 5

Sew the fabric and batting together along the edge, leaving a 1/2 inch seam allowance. Leave a 2-foot wide gap on the fourth side so you can stuff the comforter and turn it right side out.

    • 6

Turn the comforter right side out.

    • 7

Fill the comforter with polyester batting without packing it densely. Add enough batting to make a 2- to 3-inch thick layer across the comforter.

    • 8

Tuck under the raw edges of the gap on the edge of the comforter. Pin the edges together, and hand sew the gap closed.
