How to Take Apart a Schlage Lock

Schlage door locks are designed to enhance security for your home. They come in a variety of styles and shapes. Door locks are easily removed by using standard tools in your toolbox. If you have recently bought a new home or want to redecorate, you may want to remove your Schlage locks for new ones.

Things You'll Need

  • Schlage door lock
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Bucket
  • Place yourself in a location that allows for access to the door's interior side. Let the door stay ajar to also gain access to the exterior side of the door. In this location, mounting screws placed in the deadbolt assembly and doorknob should be visible and accessible.

  • Use a Phillips screwdriver and remove the two mounting screws from the doorknob's internal chassis. Repeat this step for the deadbolt assembly on the interior side of the door.

  • Use one hand to grab the doorknob's internal chassis. Use your other hand to grab the doorknob's external chassis. Separate the two halves from the door by pulling them apart and away from one another. For the removal of the deadbolt assembly, repeat the process used for the doorknob.

  • Position yourself so that you are looking at the side edge of the door. Pinpoint the deadbolt and doorknob latch assemblies. Do away with the latches by utilizing a screwdriver and removing the two screws holding each to the door. Place all screws and parts into a bucket for safekeeping.

Tips & Warnings
