How to Replace a Belt on a Whirlpool Ultimate Care II LEQ8857JQ Dryer

The Whirlpool Ultimate Care II LEQ8857JQ is a front-loading automatic dryer designed for residential use. The drum inside the dryer cabinet relies on a belt and pulley system to operate properly. A broken belt prevents the drum from turning during a dry cycle. One possible sign of a broken belt is a thumping or banging sound when the dryer is running. Replace the belt when it wears out or breaks to keep your Whirlpool LEQ8857JQ working correctly.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket wrench
  • Putty knife
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Disconnect the power cord from the wall outlet to reduce the chance of electric shock.

  • Pull the lint filter out of its compartment on the top of the LEQ8857JQ dryer. Remove the two screws located next to the filter compartment.

  • Insert the putty knife into the gap between the top and front dryer panels. Lift up the putty knife to unhook the top panel from the cabinet.

  • Lift the top panel until it rests on the wall behind the Whirlpool dryer.

  • Unhook the electrical connector that leads into the front panel. Remove the two screws connecting the top of the front panel to the cabinet. Set the front panel aside.

  • Loosen the bolt that connects the idler pulley to the cabinet. Do not remove the bolt entirely.

  • Slide the old belt off the drum and pulleys. Position the new belt around the drum. Loop the other end around the pulleys.

  • Tighten the idler pulley bolt to relieve any belt slack.

  • Replace the front panel. Connect the electrical plug to its socket. Install the two screws along the top of the front panel.

  • Lower the top panel into its previous position. Replace the two screws next to the lint screen compartment. Press down on the top panel to lock it in position.
