Skype connects friends and families around the world with the network's digital video chat program. The program is primarily run on home computers, connecting over the Internet with the computer's embedded microphone and webcam. Skype also offers a free iPhone app, which allows users to video chat over 3G and Wi-Fi networks. The app is designed for the iPhone 4, but it can connect you with your Skype contacts whether they're answering your call from a PC, Mac or another iPhone.

      Visit the App Store on the iPhone. Tap "Search," and enter "Skype" into the field. Select the official Skype app and wait for it to download to your device.

      Tap to launch the Skype app. Enter your username and password. Once you have logged in, the app will automatically load a list of your contacts based on your account information.

      Tap "Contacts." All contacts listed with a small thumbnail have access to video chat.

      Tap the contact you wish to call. Tap "Video Call" to begin dialing your friend's Skype account.

  • Standard Skype Credit and subscription rates apply to video calls made with the iPhone.

  • The iPhone 3G user can still use the app. Because the phone only has one camera, which is on the opposite side of the screen, 3G users will not be able to see the screen and be on camera at the same time. If you're particularly set on making a video call with the iPhone 3GS, hold your phone's camera in front of a mirror while you make the call.
