How to Skype on an IPhone

Using Skype is an inexpensive way to keep in touch with friends and family wherever you may be with your iPhone. The Skype for iPhone app includes the same video, phone and instant messaging services available on a computer. The app works whenever you have Internet service. You can also use Skype to call phone numbers, either with the app or by creating Skype to Go numbers for your iPhone's actual phone.

Getting Skype

  • Download the Skype app from the iPhone's App Store. Skype for iPhone version 5.4 is only 46.9MB, so it doesn't take much storage. If you already have a Skype account, you can log in with your Skype name or your Microsoft account. All your current Skype contacts are imported to the app. If you don't have an account, tap the "Create an Account" button. Skype needs access to your iPhone's microphone, so after it prompts you to grant access, press the Home button and launch "Settings." In Settings, select "Privacy," then "Microphone," and turn on the Skype "On/Off" toggle.

Adding Contacts

  • After creating a Skype account you need to add contacts. If you already had an account, Skype for iPhone will automatically show contacts you already added. To add additional contacts, tap the "More" button resembling three dots, and select "Add People." Type the Skype username, email address or real name of someone you want to contact and then tap "Search." If you get more than one result, look at each person's photo and location to help find the person you're looking for. Add a message to introduce yourself if desired and tap the "Send Contact Request" button. As soon as that person accepts the request, you can communicate with him on Skype.

Calling and Messaging

  • To contact someone in Skype, swipe the screen from left to right to access the People screen, then scroll to your friend's name. After you tap the name, tap the "Type a Message Here" text field to send a message. To call someone, tap the "Video" or "Phone" button at the bottom of the screen. If you have purchased Skype credits from the Skype website, you can also call any phone numbers by tapping the "Keyboard" button at the bottom of the screen.

Making Cheap Calls Without an App

  • The Skype To Go service gives you the option to make inexpensive calls all over the world from any phone, including an iPhone. For this service, you don't even need to install the Skype app. Just log in to your account on the Skype website, purchase some credits and then click the "Skype To Go" link. After you enter a long distance number you want to call and your own local area code, Skype gives you a local number to use instead. Register your iPhone with Skype and then add this number to your iPhone Contacts. You can then use that local number each time you make a call to save on international rates.
