How Set Up Email on a Droid

Save

The Motorola Droid is a Verizon Wireless smartphone using the Google Android operating system. When the phone is activated, a Gmail account is linked to the Droid and becomes your default account. That Gmail account is used to sync emails, contacts and calendars with the Gmail servers. It's also used to identify you when making purchases in the Android Marketplace. You can add POP3, IMAP and Microsoft Exchange email accounts to your Droid.

  • Press the "Applications Tray" on the Droid home screen. Scroll to "Email" and touch the icon.

  • Enter the address of your email account, "name@yourserver.com" for example, and the password for the account. Press "Next."

  • Press the type of account. Most email accounts are POP3. Enter your login user name. Enter the POP3 server name -- for example, "mail.yourserver.com." Enter the port number for outgoing mail on the server. POP3 normally uses Port 110. Press the "Security Type" drop-down menu if your POP3 server uses Secure Socket Layers. Tap "Never" from the "Delete Email From Server" drop-down menu if you want to leave your email on the server, or "When I Delete From Inbox" if you want to delete the mail on the server when you delete it from your Droid inbox. Press "Next."

  • Enter the SMTP server name. Enter the port number for incoming mail on the server. SMTP normally uses Port 25. Press the "Security Type" drop-down menu if your SMTP server uses SSL or TLS security. Press the "Require Sign-In" check box if you must enter a username and password to send mail to your SMTP server. Change the user name and password, if different from your POP3 login details. Press "Next."

  • Tap how frequently your Droid will check for new mail on this account from the "Email Checking Frequency" drop-down menu, or touch "Never" to manually check the account. Press the "Send Email From This Account By Default" check box if you want the new account to be your primary email account. Press "Notify Me When Email Arrives" if you want visual and audio notifications when a new email is received. Press "Next."

  • Enter a name for the account if you wish. Enter the name that will be shown on all outgoing emails. Press "Done."
